Palo Alto has new environmental sustainability goals for 2012

Along with other issues the city will be focusing on this year, increasing environmental sustainability will remain a priority for Palo Alto. According to Palo Alto Online article, Green goals, infrastructure on city’s 2012 agenda posted on January 6, city council is aiming to achieve new performance targets for its Climate Action and Zero Waste plans.

GREENLIGHT Film Festival

The Greenlight Earth Day Film Festival is a celebration of Earth Day featuring film projects that explore environmental citizenship and show how individual actions can reduce environmental impacts. Films featured at the 2012 Festival will be produced by local artists and student-produced films. Deadline for entries will be March 2012. This film should creatively inspire others to find ways of saving energy! The requirements for submitting a film in this category include: must be a student (any age group) and must present a film focused on energy conservation and efficiency. The winning filmmaker will wear the title “Community Energy Champion” and receive a special award. The winning film will get viewed at Santa Clara County schools and far beyond.

Tree is planted for Fallen Los Altos environmental leader

A tree will be planted in memory of Patty Rosewater, 58, the chair of the Los Altos Environmental Commission and a former GreenTown Los Altos finance chair. The ceremony was held Dec. 10 at 2 pm. Rosewater was known for her energy and organization, she passed away with liver failure on Sept. 4. The tree was planted at Redwood Groove Nature Preserve because Rosewater had been involved with environmental nonprofit Acterra’s plans to remove non-native species there.

More private Bay Area land could become protected (PA Online)

According to a Palo Alto Online article published on Dec. 11, the Bay Area Open Space Council identified over 1 million acres of private land that will potentially become protected. This study of the Bay Area is part of an effort to maintain its biodiversity.

Mothers Breath Easy (Clean Air Act)

Silicon Valley mothers have united to laucnh a new initiative called Moms Clean Air Force. This is the idea of Ms. Browning,“Mother love is a force of nature,” author and environmentalist, and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Industry and some congressional leaders are trying to undermine the Clean Air Act, originally passed by President Nixon in 1970. The act “was intended to regulate emissions of hazardous air pollutants”.

“We want to transcend politics to get to a deeper core of values, the ones that protect our children’s future,” Ms. Browning said.

Co- Founder of the Committee for Green Foothills dies at 92 (Palo Alto Online)

Ruth Beahrs Spangenberg, one of the co-founders of the Commitee for Green Foothills, died recently. The committee, established in 1962, helps protect nature and wildlife around the San Fransisco Bay Peninsula.
